Narrative music videos might narrate the song or create a paralle narrative that comments on the meaning of the song.
Performance videos show the artist singing/or playing the song, often with dancing usually with the direct address to camera to personally positions the viewer :
Performance videos will sometimes include sections of narrative, either performed by the artists orby actors. on the other hand, some narrative videos include sections of artists performing, specially towards the end of the video.
These are conventions of performance music videos
Lip-syncing
Live performance
Main focus on artist or band
Perform to cameras
These are conventions of narrative music videos
Video tells a story
Usually filmed and edited like a movie
Story often matches lyrics
Doesn't always feature artists
Record labels use music videos for a number of purposes:

To promote the artists image, identity, talent or status for an audience
To showcase or promote the artists musical prowess for a specific audience
Skater Boi - Avril Lavigne
The beginning of the video establish the urban setting getting lots of diegetic sound, from a city based environment. The gravity connote it may be a run down area.
the man dropping in to shot on a rope adds excitement and a feeling of active sportiness, might be aimed to appeal to younger audience.
The messy bedroom would be familier to many teen, as would the selection of technologies used.
The technologies featured were popular in the early 2000s, and would have made it relatable to young people.
The fast paced montage creates a youthful and exciting feel. shots of people flyering, and going through man hole covers create an edgy and slightly criminal representation.
Jumping into the shot represents her as energetic and exciting. her casual urban cloths are unconventional as females singers are often sexualised. could be seen as conventional for funk pop sub genre.
what she is wearing reflect the fashion in 2002 for skate culture baggy clothing. may make lavigne seem alternative and quirky
the characters mentioned in the brief narrative are represent in more simple opposition stereotypes. Eg a male musican /skater and a female glamorous ballet dancer.use of stereotypes helps audience narrative easily eg opposites attract / dont judge a book by its cover.
skinny ties was fashionable in 2002 also links to school which engages young audiences and may potentially add a sexualised feel to her for some audiences. the tie being loose and half undone signifies that she is a rebel and a rule breaker.
Biking indoors sugest again that she does not listen to or follow rules. represents her as being a daredevil and many teen would either relate to this, or dream of being like her. the setting is crumbling and dirty and this adds a sense of punk/grudge to the music. it represents her as down to earth and not a star who is polished by perfection.

L/O To explore the use of media language to create meaning in music videos.
Do artists perform? if so, to who?
In skater boy Avil is performing to the camera and also to the people around her, in teenage dirtbag wheatus in performing to the camera and to the people around him.
Is there a sense of naturalism created through use of MES and setting? if so, how is this created?
How does it follow genre conventions?
Is there any diegetic sound used, how and why?
in skater boy there is diegetic sound from where the skateboard hits the ground and we as viewers can here it as well as the people around it. in teenage dirtbag diegetic sound is used to add a sense of place and to surport the narrative.

COVER ANALYSIS 1 DIRT:
Good - but I'd like to see much more detail. Colour palette, typography, image type etc. You're still just describing the elements rather than saying WHY they are used.
COVER ANALYSIS 2:
Your small task answers are ok (although very brief in places) however, the comparison is better. You've compared, but you still need to explain WHY they are used - link them to the genre or target audience.
